BDP works alongside communities across Buchan to help turn local ideas into practical action.

Our role is not simply to provide advice or help complete funding applications. We help groups understand what is needed to move forward, whether that is governance, community engagement, planning, land ownership, technical advice, funding, partnership working or simply connecting the right people.

Sometimes that means helping a community build or strengthen the structure it needs to have a voice and take action.

Cruden Bay Community Council is one example of the kind of support BDP has provided over the years.

More recently, BDP has supported the development of the newly formed Boddam & District Community Association, helping the community move from having no effective local voice to establishing a steering group, constitution, formal committee and the beginnings of a Community Action Plan process.

The difference is not simply that a new organisation exists. It is that the community now has a structure through which local people can identify priorities, represent their interests and begin taking projects forward.

Our work also includes:

• supporting groups with governance, constitutions and organisational development;
• helping communities develop Community Action Plans and Local Place Plans;
• identifying and progressing funding opportunities;
• helping groups work through project-readiness issues such as planning, ownership, insurance and technical requirements;
• building relationships between communities, public agencies, developers, funders and contractors;
• creating opportunities for collaboration between local organisations;
• helping communities identify priorities and build a pipeline of projects for both now and the future.

We keep track of the groups and projects we support, the type of support provided, progress made and the outcomes achieved. This is reviewed through regular Development Officer reporting, follow-up with groups, partnership discussions and BDP forums.

The “so what?” is the change that follows.

A community may gain a stronger voice.

An idea may become a deliverable project.

A funding opportunity may become a new facility.

A partnership may create something that would not otherwise have happened.

A small intervention may make people feel more connected to their place and to the wider community.

Much of this impact is not immediately visible in a set of figures, but it can be seen in stronger organisations, better connected communities and projects that are more likely to succeed.

That is where BDP adds value — by listening, connecting, helping remove barriers and supporting communities to move from ideas to action.
